Best backend for Lovable
Checked Oct 2026Our recommendation: For most projects, use Lovable's built-in backend (Lovable Cloud), which is on by default. Connect your own Supabase project if you want to own the backend: your own account and billing, full dashboard access, or an existing Supabase project. [17]
Based on Lovable's official documentation. Lovable documents only these two options, so we don't rank other backends here. We haven't tested either hands-on.
| Lovable Cloud (built-in) | Your own Supabase | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Automatic, no extra account | Needs a Supabase account and project |
| Billing | Credits in your Lovable workspace | Your Supabase plan: Free; Pro from $25/mo (official pricing, checked 2026-10-19) |
| Manage it in | The Cloud view inside Lovable | The Supabase dashboard |
| Built on | Supabase's open-source foundation (same database, auth, storage, edge functions) | Supabase |
| Best for (per Lovable) | Most projects; fastest path to a working backend | Teams who want to own their Supabase account and infrastructure |
Trade-offs to know
- There's no one-click migration between Lovable Cloud and your own Supabase, in either direction, so decide early. [17]
- Some Lovable features work only on the built-in backend, such as in-editor database views, managed backups and resizing, configuring auth from the chat, and signed-in browser testing. [17]
- Each Lovable project connects to one Supabase project at a time. [17]
- What builders say about Supabase: Indie devs run real production apps on it; critics warn against putting core logic in RLS and Edge Functions, and Pro often costs more than the $25 base. [9] [10]
