Quick verdict
- Biggest tradeoff
- Editor versus price. Cursor means moving to its own VS Code-based editor; Copilot plugs into yours. On models, Copilot Pro ($10/mo) includes $15 of AI credits for Claude, GPT and Gemini models, while Cursor's $8 Plus plan is Grok-only and other makers' models need Premium ($30/mo) plus usage at API list price.157
- Bottom line
- Want to keep your editor and pay the least for Claude or GPT models: GitHub Copilot. Want an AI-first editor that indexes your whole repo: Cursor. Some builders run both, Copilot for everyday completion and Cursor for bigger changes.1257
Choose Cursor if…
Choose GitHub Copilot if…
- You want to stay in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, Neovim, Zed or Eclipse with your own settings.15
- You want Claude, GPT and Gemini models from $10/mo: Copilot Pro includes $15 of AI credits a month.5
- You work on GitHub and want to assign an issue to Copilot and get a pull request back (Pro and up).5
What this means in practice
Builders split on context. Some who switched say Cursor knows where things are because it indexes the whole repo. One developer on a messy legacy codebase prefers Copilot because it works from the files you have open, and notes you can still point its agents at the whole repo.1
Cost comes up a lot. In r/cursor and r/GithubCopilot, users report getting more usage per dollar from Copilot than from Cursor. Those threads are from January to March 2026, before both tools' current plans, so read them as direction, not as today's prices.34
Copilot now bills AI use in credits: 1 GitHub AI credit = $0.01. Code completions and next edit suggestions don't use credits and are unlimited on paid plans; chat, agent mode, code review and the cloud agent do. When credits run out you wait for the monthly reset, set a budget for paid usage, or switch to a cheaper model.5
Cursor's plans share one AI usage pool across Cursor and Grok that refreshes weekly. Plus includes Grok models only. Premium and up add cloud agents and Bugbot code reviews, and third-party models such as Claude and GPT are billed separately at API list price.7
New this week: GitHub made Copilot Fusion generally available on Oct 28, 2026. You pick an effort level and Copilot routes each prompt across one or more models, billed at each model's standard rate, with 30% off for a limited time on paid plans.6

Weaknesses
Cursor
- Usage can drain fast.12Why it matters: Builders report Cursor usage running out quicker than expected, and one team admin said they could no longer cap individual users' spend.
- Other makers' models cost extra.7Why it matters: Claude or GPT in Cursor needs Premium ($30/mo) plus usage at API list price.
- You switch editors.1Why it matters: Cursor is its own VS Code-based editor; one builder found it hides settings and changes default keybindings.
GitHub Copilot
- Less project awareness by default.1Why it matters: Builders say Copilot works mostly from the current or open files unless you point it at the whole repo.
- Can be inconsistent.4Why it matters: One heavy user called it the most bang for the buck but also one of the most inconsistent, after a buggy few weeks.
- Credit-based usage.5Why it matters: Chat, agents and code review draw on monthly AI credits, and long sessions on frontier models use more.

Final verdict
Choose Cursor if
You want an AI-first editor that indexes your whole repo, and you're fine switching editors and paying API prices for non-Grok models.
Choose GitHub Copilot if
You want to keep your current editor, work on GitHub, and get Claude, GPT and Gemini models from $10/mo.
Overall takeaway: On a budget, start with GitHub Copilot: it plugs into your editor and Pro's $10/mo includes model credits. Pick Cursor if whole-repo context in an AI-first editor matters more than price. Neither is hands-on tested by us.157
